Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists

MLA In Training

Can an MLA in Training apply for a MLA license?

Yes, an MLA in Training is an individual currently employed by the NSH/IWK who is enrolled or has completed a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or its equivalent. However, they have yet to write the MLA entry to practice exam.

Upon meeting these requirements, they will be issued a provisional license and will be required to have direct supervision by a licensed Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT).

MLA in Training:

Perform all MLA tasks under direct supervision of a designated MLT.  Refer to REG.012 Guidelines for Direct Supervision of Provisional Licensed MLTs for further criteria.

  • Not work alone or with just another provisional license holder.
  • Not hold a supervisory or an advanced technical position.
  • Not be delegated any task.
  • Be prepared to write the next entry to practice exam.
  • May have progress reviewed at any time by the NSCMLT Registrar.
  • Renew the provisional license yearly as required.
  • Sign an NSCMLT acknowledgement form

Upon successful completion of the MLA entry-to-practice exam, the MLA in training shall provide the NSCMLT with documentation of the successful completion of the exam and proof of practicing personal liability insurance (PLI) in the amount of at least $2,000,000.

Upon receipt of all required documentation, the provisional license will be automatically updated to a full, active license without any additional cost.
