MLA In Training

Can an MLA in Training Apply for a MLA license?

Yes

MLAs in training are individuals who are currently employed by the NSH/IWK and who are enrolled or have completed a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program or are completing a prior learning assessment and have yet to write the MLA entry to practice exam.

If you are currently practising as an MLA in training who have not enrolled or completed an MLA program or PLA, you will receive a provisional license with conditions and restrictions.

Restrictions for MLAs in Training with a Provisional License:

  • Not work alone or with just another provisional license holder.
  • Not hold a supervisory or an advanced technical position.
  • Not be delegated any task.
  • Be prepared to write the next entry to practice exam.
  • May have their progress reviewed at any time by the NSCMLT.
  • Renew the provisional license yearly as required.
  • Submit an NSCMLT Acknowledgement of Supervision form signed by the MLA in training and their Manager/Director.
  • Upon successful completion of the MLA entry-to-practice exam, you shall provide the NSCMLT with documentation of the successful completion of your MLA program/PLA and the MLA entry to practice exam, and proof of practicing professional liability insurance (PLI) in the amount of at least $2,000,000.

Upon receipt of all required documentation, the provisional license will be automatically updated to a full, active license without any additional cost.
