The Board Responsibilities
The Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologists (NSCMLT) Board is responsible for the following functions:
Act in the interest of public safety in regard to medical laboratory technology
Prescribe the qualifications required for the scope of practice within the medical laboratory technologist (MLT) profession and monitor, and ensure educational institutions and courses of studies or programs are accredited
Authorize the registration of MLTs under the Act, and to maintain a register
Consider applications for annual practising registrations
Review and promote the competence of MLTs registered
Receive and act upon information from health professionals, employers, and the public about the competence of MLTs registered with NSCMLT
Notify employers, NS Department of Health that the practice of a registered MLT may pose a risk of harm to the public
Set standards of clinical competence, cultural and ethical conduct for MLTs
Promote public awareness of the responsibilities of the College
Exercise and perform any other functions, powers, and duties that are conferred or imposed on it by or under the Act or any other enactment
