Return to Practice

Applicants that previously held a registration with the College, but surrendered for a period of time, will need to re-apply for registration. You are required to submit a copy of your professional liability insurance, intent to hire letter and your continuing competencies (TeKnowledge.ns) must be current.

Remember: You cannot work as a Medical Laboratory Technologist in Nova Scotia until you have received notice from NSCMLT that your application has been approved.

Return to Practice Requirements (revised July 2020)

5 years or less

  • General MLTs, Diagnostic Cytology MLTs, Clinical Genetics MLTs who have practiced within the previous 5 years must
  • Obtain or have a valid TeKnowledge.ns certificate
  • Apply online under return to practice with a previous license number
  • Submit proof of professional liability insurance
  • Submit an intent to hire letter from employer
  • Submit letter of standing if applicable

5-10 years

General MLTs, Diagnostic Cytology MLTs, Clinical Genetics MLTs who have not practiced in more than 5 years (5 years plus a day), but less than 10 years must successfully fulfill the following requirements before a Practicing License will be issued:

  • Fulfill all requirements in TimeFrame 1
  • Completion or enrolled in refresher course(s) in the discipline(s) the MLT wishes to obtain a provisional license to practice (submit certification with application).
  • Complete 400 hours of direct supervised practice by a licensed MLT.
  • A Provisional License will be issued in the discipline(s) being assessed for competencies by a supervisor.
  • All relevant competencies in the workplace must be demonstrated and signed off while under direct supervision in each discipline in which the MLT wish to obtain a Active practicing license.
  • Submit the completed competency assessment to NSCMLT

    The candidates Provisional License will be expanded to include practice in additional disciplines as additional courses and assessments are completed. The candidate must complete the required supervised practice hours to obtain an Active practising license.

10 years or more

General MLTs, Diagnostic Cytology MLTs, Clinical Genetics MLTs who have not practiced in 10 years (10 years plus a day) or more must fulfill the following requirements before a Provisional Practicing License will be issued:

  • Fulfill requirements of TimeFrame II except complete an additional 100 hours of supervised practised for a total of 500 directly supervised practice hours.
  • Refresher course(s) in the discipline(s) they wish to practice must be completed before a Provisional license would be issued.
  • A Provisional License may be issued in the discipline(s) being assessed for competencies by a licensed MLT.
  • All relevant competencies must be demonstrated and signed off while under direct supervision in each discipline in which the MLT wish to obtain an Active practicing license.

The candidates Provisional License will be expanded to include practice in additional disciplines as additional courses and assessments are completed. The candidate must complete the required supervised practice hours to obtain a Active practising license.
