Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professional Regulators (CAMLPR) Competency Profile

Subject: Important Update about National MLT Certification Process and Competency Profiles

NSCMLT Registrants,

I am reaching out to share an important update regarding the delivery of examination and prior learning assessment services for those looking to gain entry to practice as a Medical Laboratory Technologist (MLT) in Canada.

Canadian Alliance of Medical Laboratory Professionals Regulators (CAMLPR) and the Canadian Society for Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) recently released communications stating that CAMLPR has made the decision to assume the responsibility of delivering prior learning assessments and examination services for those wishing to enter the MLT profession in Canada.

CAMLPR is a voluntary alliance of medical laboratory technology provincial health regulatory authorities, and NSCMLT is one of the member organizations. This decision is the result of CAMLPR’s legislated regulatory requirements and will be CAMLPR’s next priority after wrapping up their “Gateway for MLTs” and “Flexible Registration Pathways” projects.

Additionally, CAMLPR will be developing PLA processes and entry to practice certification examinations as part of this broader transition. The CSMLS has agreed to work collaboratively with CAMLPR throughout this transition.

Given that you are already a Medical Laboratory Technologist registered with NSCMLT, these changes have no impact on your current registration.

The regulation of our profession will remain effective and intact and will be more responsive to health human resource needs of public laboratories across Canada.

We invite you to consult the CAMLPR website for more information about this organization, the Gateway for MLTs and Flexible Pathways projects, and competency profiles and future updates on this matter.

Thank you for your dedication to the medical laboratory profession.
