Annual Renewal
The annual renewal process is a core NSCMLT regulatory function. It confirms to the public that our members have the education, ethical foundation, skills and good character to practice medical laboratory technology in Nova Scotia. You’re recommitting to the values and standards of our profession and commitment to lifelong learning. Professional medical laboratory assistant, medical laboratory technologist or a combined laboratory x-ray technologists (MLP) registration is a privilege our members can take pride in.
Remember:
You cannot work as a medical laboratory assistant, medical laboratory technologist or a combined laboratory x-ray technologists in Nova Scotia unless your license is active.
Important Dates
Our licence renewal opens September 15 and closes December 31. Please note late fees are applied after December 1.

Payroll Deduction
Medical Laboratory Technologists On Payroll Deduction
- MLTs on payroll deduction through their employer (NSH, IWK, CBS) are required to submit a renewal application.
- Select your payroll deduction provider under "Choose Your Method of Payment".
- If you do not submit your application before December 1, you are subject to late fees as noted above.
- If you were on a leave of absence in the current year, check with your HR department to confirm your deductions were submitted.
Begin Payroll Deduction
Would you like to have your NSCMLT fees deducted from your pay throughout the year? Please contact your HR department to begin the process.
Going on Leave (parental, short or long term) or Retiring
You are required to renew your licence if you are planning on working at any time during the year. That includes a few days or weeks. Your licence is valid for the entire year. NSCMLT does not offer any short-term licence. If you are not going to renew for the following year, you must complete a notice of non-practice Change of License Status Form
Licensed Under the "Grandfather Clause"
Grandfather Clause Limitations: MLAs who are licensed under the grandfather clause are authorized to practice in their current MLA role at their current site. However, they are not permitted to change their role or assume a leadership position. If an MLA leaves or retires from a grandfathered MLA position, they are eligible to return to their grandfathered position within a six-month period. After six months, they will be required to obtain the necessary MLA education before being reinstated to practice.
To maintain their license to practice under the “grandfather clause,” MLAs must maintain a license status at the minimum as a “non-practicing status” until their return to work in the same role. If an MLA chooses not to maintain a license, after six months, they will be required to meet the educational requirements to practice as an MLA.
Your Accountability As A Licensed MLP
As self regulated professionals, all MLPs are responsible to renew their licence yearly to legally practice as a medical laboratory assistant, medical laboratory technologist or a combined laboratory x-ray technologists. NSCMLT will send out reminders to renew and notification when your renewal is complete to your email on file. Working as an MLP without a practising licence may result in a professional misconduct complaint.
To Avoid Delays in Renewal Approval:
All continuing competency requirements must be current as of December 31. If your continuing competency requirements are not up to date your renewal application will not be approved.
Renewals cannot be approved without Professional Liability Insurance (PLI) for the renewal year.
Please read each declaration question carefully and ensure your answers are true and accurate. All the declarations do NOT have the same response. Your answers are legally binding.
Ensure all your Employment details are current, such as your position status, areas of practice, practice hours etc.
