The Oral and Maxillofacial Sciences department runs an oral pathology biopsy service for histopathological diagnosis of human specimens submitted from dental professionals. Limited research services are also offered to dental faculty researchers. Reporting to the Oral Pathologist, the Histotechnologist is responsible for a range of specimen accessioning and processing, as well as administrative duties.

Key Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Oral Pathologist, perform accurate grossing and orientation of specimens for optimal histological evaluation.
Accession, process, embed, cut, stain, cover slip, label, organize and deliver routine and special stains of biopsy with speed and accuracy.
Provide histotechnology services and technical consultation in the design and development of research projects for faculty and students.
Ensure the safe handling and use of all reagents, chemicals and equipment in the oral and maxillofacial pathology laboratory, in compliance with all University and WHIMIS safety regulations.
Maintain electronic documents and files on laboratory policies, protocols, safety information, WHIMIS documents, quality assurance policies, records etc.
Ordering and maintaining inventory supplies and proper maintenance of laboratory equipment.

Qualifications: Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology with approximately 2-3 years of related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience) is required. Must be registered with Nova Scotia College of Medical Laboratory Technologies and possess an up-to-date TeKnowledge certificate. Experience or training in gross dissection of small specimens would be an asset. Must have the ability to work independently with excellent attention to detail, as well as good interpersonal skills and the ability to work as part of a team. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) required. Must have demonstrated ability to initiate and complete appropriate trouble-shooting procedures for all histology laboratory functions, including instrument and method development.
